NATIONAL MEN’S HEALTH WEEK

In 1994 President Bill Clinton recognized the week prior to Father’s Day as National Men’s Health Week. We celebrate the men in our lives, focusing on health and what changes can be made to lead to better health.

FACTS ABOUT MEN’S HEALTH

  • Men make up 56% of the workforce
  • 94% of workforce fatalities are men
  • 30% of men’s overall health is determined by genetics
  • Men are 30% more likely to die from heart disease at an earlier age
  • Alcohol kills 6 times more men than women
  • Top 3 reasons of men’s reduced lifespan are cardiovascular disease, suicide and car accidents. 
  • 1 in 2 men with develop cancer
  • On average men live 5 years less than women 
  • Men constitute 76% of suicides

SET GOALS

  • Try for a waist measurement of 36 inches or less, 37 inches and above is considered a hazardous measurement
  • Set a goal of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week 
  • Set a goal of 5 portions of veggies and fruits per day 
  • Try to keep blood pressure at 120/80, the average normal
  • Make a yearly check up appointment with your physician
  • Take the time to make choices about your healthcare and share those decisions with your loved ones

It can be difficult to find time but the effort pays off in surplus.  This week is a great reminder that your health is a large part of your happiness.  Take the time to take care of yourself, take a walk, play golf, take a nap or read a book.
