MASK BASICS 101

Our Choice team has been monitoring the 2019-nCoV infection information. We have seen an increase in questions on prevention and treatment and we believe that concern can best be minimized by information. Our goal has always been to provide sources of information so after extensive discussion we have decided to continue to post topics of education during this time. We encourage everyone to seek knowledge and stay up to date on recommendations provided by healthcare authorities such as the CDC and WHO. Education and prevention are our greatest tools.

As a healthcare providers we are noticing an increase in mask usage in the general community. Unfortunately we are also noticing people are improperly wearing and disposing of the mask. We are hopeful that this post will help in determining if you should wear a mask as well as how to properly utilize the mask if you do wear one. We have attached the a video from the WHO on proper mask usage.

The World Health Organization recommends masks be worn for the following reasons:

  • If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
  • Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.
